It is said that beauty is fully subjective and that it is only skin deep. However, it seems that the eye of the beholder sees different things depending on where in the country they live. According to Dr. Alton Ingram MD, there are very significant geographical differences in terms of which plastic and cosmetic surgery is the most popular. Understanding this has set in motion a personal interest for Dr. Ingram, who now wants to know which surgical care is the most appropriate and where.

The southeastern states are clearly interested in buttock implants. The Midwest, on the other hand, sees lip reductions as the most popular procedure. Meanwhile, hair transplants are popular in the south and male breast reduction is common in the northeast. In the West, where Hollywood is also found, breast augmentation is the most popular procedure. Contrast this with the south, and breast implant removal becomes more common. What has interested Dr. Ingram is what is causing those differences. He believes that the main three reasons are technology, culture, and weather.

A Larger Breast Example

Dr. Ingram explains that, in a state such as California or Florida, people expose themselves more as a result of the weather. This means that they are more focused on what they look like with fewer clothes on, the state of their breasts being an obvious first choice. Ohio, meanwhile, is a lot colder and people tend to be a lot more wrapped up, leaving them less body conscious than Floridians and Californians. People in Ohio do want to look good, of course, but they are less concerned about their breasts and other such parts of the body. Indeed, various plastic surgeons here have been asked to remove breast implants or downsize them as women try to obtain a more natural look. In colder climates such as Ohio, women want to be comfortable yet look good enough to wear the occasional swimsuit.

There are, in fact, states in which the breast augmentation procedure, long believed to be the most popular and common overall, doesn’t even make it into the top five of most popular procedures. Consider, for instance, that the most popular Northeastern procedure is male breast reduction. Some surgeons believe this is due to the corporate culture in these areas and particularly in NYC. Men want to be confident in the workplace, with some needing to work like addicts need a drug. This means they have to look their best as well, almost obsessively so.

The most popular cosmetic procedure in the south is the hair transplant. No other part of the country lists this anywhere in their top 5. Of interest is also the fact that the southeast and Midwest have fewer plastic surgery procedures completed than the south, northeast, and west. However, the Midwest is certainly an area for opportunity for surgeons wanting to set up a practice.
