In some ways, the title of today’s post should not come as a surprise. After all, from a general point of view at least, New York has become the home of pretty much everything.
When it comes to tattoos, the city does have something of a chequered past though. There was a period, and it only ended in the past couple of decades, where tattoos were illegal to obtain in the city. Sure, it wasn’t illegal to don them on skin, but to actually have the procedure done in NYC was completely out of the question.
As such, the fact that tattoos have now made it onto the New York scene is interesting to say the least. Through the rest of today’s post, Douglas A. Grady will review just which trends are proving to be the most prominent in the Big Apple nowadays.
Stencilling using plants
One of the more interesting designs we have come across comes courtesy of plants. In short, rather than using a traditional tattoo, this involves using the plant itself as a stencil.
The process works by dipping the plant into the ink, before then applying it to the skin. However, things take a turn for the more adventurous when this is then used as a stencil – meaning that the ink is applied in two ways to the skin. It makes the final product realistic and unsurprisingly, a lot different to the average plant tattoos.
Another interesting development in the industry in New York has been bio-sensitive tattoos. This has been developed by Harvard, so there is naturally a lot of excitement regarding it.
In short, the ink is sensitive to your body’s internal temperature. For example, if your glucose levels increase, the ink will change from green to brown. There are even colour changes that relate to your hydration levels – meaning that some people are using these tattoos more like health monitors, rather than items of fashion.
Something that is a little more controversial comes in the form of blackout tattoos.
It’s worth highlighting that these tattoos are turned to in differing situations. For example, in some cases it might be to cover up an existing tattoos. This is something which is proving to be increasingly popular, as naturally the process here is much easier than the whole tattoo removal process.
In other cases, it’s just a trend that’s getting bigger by the day. A black background, with white ink designs, proves to be something that’s completely out of the ordinary.
Finally, this next trend has been referred to in some quarters as chandelier like. Regardless of how you define the name, it can be described as a main image gradually disintegrating into droplets. It’s something that has caught a lot of attention in the city and unlike some of the other trends we have mulled over today, it’s something that’s not necessarily as major.
