The Walking DeadAMC

I promise my headline is not a spoiler. If you don’t read the comics, you might think, “oh no, Daryl got killed off in the comics!” but if you do read the comics you’ll know that…Daryl is not in the comics, so I’m talking about something else that could affect him in the future, but it’s just a theory at the moment.

I am a bit behind the times on this, as this happened about a month ago when the issue was released, but there was a big, rather earthshattering moment in the current Commonwealth saga where the still-alive Rick Grimes is deciding what to do with the elitist community. Spoilers follow for that storyline, but who knows what will translate to the show.

The problem with the Commonwealth is that it’s run by rich elites at the expense of the common man where people are “assigned” jobs and worth based on what they used to do before the apocalypse. Seems like kind of a stupid system, though they have built a community 50,000 members strong. But a populist revolt is brewing. Both Rick and Dwight sense it, and feel like something may have to be done, but Rick wants to go about things diplomatically while Dwight, the former Savior, wants riots in the streets.

This culminates in a scene where Dwight actually pulls a gun on Pamela Milton, the governor of the Commonwealth, thinking that if he can just assassinate her, the revolution would effectively be won on the spot. Rick thinks this is a poor idea, such a poor idea that he…shoots Dwight in the head to prevent him from pulling the trigger. Yikes.

In the comics Dwight and Rick have been frenemies since the Savior war, and this is a pretty big deal. And an even bigger deal when it sure seems like Daryl has effectively taken over Dwight’s role from the comics.

In the show, Dwight went off to find Sherry and has simply…never returned. While it’s not impossible he returns to the show eventually, we have now flash-forwarded something like six years, and he’s never come back. Instead, before the flashbacks, when Daryl was butting heads with Rick, and now after, when Daryl will become an important general in the war against the Whisperers, it absolutely feels like Daryl is taking on the Dwight comic role.

It’s also easy to imagine him getting to the Commonwealth storyline and being the one that wants to rebel against the fascist rich people. So it very well could end up being him in that position getting his head blown off by…well not Rick, obviously, but Michonne? Carol? Aaron? Whoever steps up into that position.

This seems like a big moment that the show will not be able to avoid, like the Negan bat execution or an upcoming horrifying moment with the Whisperers I won’t spoil. It’s one of the most significant deaths I’ve seen in the comic in a very long time, and I do wonder if Daryl might be thrust into that role if Dwight never returns.
