Just when it was feeling like fashion was getting too same-y, that everybody was in high-waisted jeans with crisp white shirts, that it was too lacking in real personal style, along comes the Celine Dion having the greatest fashion summer of her life.
Yes, Celine Dion – a woman, god bless, who has always felt herself – is having a glorious style moment, and the fashion illuminati can’t get enough.
Of course Dion knows it, if her #OOTD posts are anything to go by. FASHION’S OTHER CELINE Are we crazy or is Ms. Dion having the style summer of her life? First she stepped out in Paris wearing £85,000 worth of leather Givenchy dungarees, Kanye for Giuseppe Zanotti heels and the mother of all snakeskin Birkins (a look she accessorised with munching on a crepe, fyi). Then she went for a chav-tastically chic royal blue tracksuit from Off-White. Today it’s top-to-toe Balmain, complete with roaring tiger and baker boy hat. As her stylist @luxurylaw told Style’s @louisamcg earlier this year, “Celine is really, really fun. I met her in Las Vegas at the Billboard Awards and she told me she hadn’t been to a fashion show in twenty years and could I choose a few couture shows in Paris that I thought would be good for her to go to. It was fun to see people’s reaction to her being in that environment – she wasn’t the stereotypical person on the front row at the shows. Couture is a little bit snobby, but at the Giambattista Valli show she stood up, she clapped, she showed emotion. Like, that’s an example that we don’t have to behave a certain type of way – if you love something, you love it.” You’ve got to rate a woman with the confidence to know what she likes. You do you, babe.
Yes, it’s because of those incredible faux leather Givenchy overalls (paired with a Céline blouse and a silver and gold Himalayan crocodile Hermès Birkin) and the fact that she was one of the first (only?) people to wear the Vetements Titanic jersey (maybe it was made custom for her? I mean, it’s practically cosmic).
It’s also because Dion, at age 49, is in that glorious phase of really not caring what people think. But the crucial thing is that she’s always been that way.
Who can forget the backwards tuxedo and fedora that Dion wore to the Oscars in 1999? It was pilloried but, here’s the thing: it was a risk, it was an expression of her personal aesthetic and probably her belief systems.
It was style.
And the other thing, at least according to her stylist, Law Roach, Dion really, really loves fashion.
He said of her recent return to the haute couture shows in Paris,”[She] wasn’t the stereotypical person on the front row at the shows. Couture is a little bit snobby, but at the Giambattista Valli show she stood up, she clapped, she showed emotion. Like, that’s an example that we don’t have to behave a certain type of way – if you love something, you love it.”
And isn’t that what’s so compelling about Celine Dion? She wears over-the-top, entirely extravagant, sometimes downright weird outfits… because she loves them. Because she doesn’t care if she’s on-trend.
The real reason that Dion has captured the fashion press’ attention is that like other true fashion creatures – Anna Della Russo, the (late) Isabella Blow, Daphne Guinness – she lives and breathes fashion. She has personal style. The kind that can take people a really long time to come around too, and by the time they do, the fashion creature is streaks of fabulous ahead again.
Enjoy your moment, Celine! You’ve earned it (not that you need us to tell you that).
And pray tell, may this usher in a new era of people really, truly feeling themselves, expressing themselves. Let our hearts go on.
