WHITTIER, California — Los Angeles County authorities say a crew of burglars made off with at least $1 million worth of jewelry and precious metals during a sophisticated heist at a store in Whittier.

Police Lt. Mike Przybyl says the break-in at Whittier Jewelry Mart happened between Saturday evening and Monday morning.

Owner Alberto Montes De Oca tells the San Gabriel Valley Tribune the burglars came in through the roof and cut into a fortified safe.

The lieutenant says an exact tally of what was stolen wasn’t immediately available and the total loss might be as much as $3 million.

Investigators say the crime involved sophisticated planning and involved multiple people.

De Oca says the jewelry mart has been in business for 40 years and he’s not sure it can recover.
