Four men wearing sunglasses came into the Macy’s by Oak Court Mall on Friday evening and stole an unknown amount of jewelry in a smash-and-grab theft before fleeing, Memphis police said.
“Basically they tried to smash the glass with hammers and take all the jewelry they could get,” said Memphis police Lt. Joe Owen.
They made threats, but no weapons were seen and no shots were fired, he said.
Taken were several bracelets, said police spokeswoman Lt. Karen Rudolph.
The call came in shortly after 8:30 p.m.
Police had cordoned off a first-floor section of the store with yellow crime scene tape. A big panel of glass lay shattered by one case, and a smaller countertop display case lay toppled behind the counter. Owen said the thieves had tried to make off with the small display case, apparently not realizing it was connected to the counter.
The police were examining the scene and talking with a witness. The mall remained open as they investigated, and customers walked by the crime scene as music played over loudspeakers.
The suspects fled in a four-door blue Chevy Impala, police said.[“Source-commercialappeal”]
